How Cows Make Me Smile And Motivate Me For Success

“Those who want milk don’t just sit in a field and wait for a cow to back up to them.” – Author Unknown
That is my all time favorite quote. I first heard it over 12 years ago on a conference call. It cracked me up back then and it still makes me smile. The illustration is so ridiculous yet so appropriate.
If you want milk you have to do something to get it. Action is required. These days you can go to the store so its pretty easy.
Sadly many people approach their business as though they were sitting in a field waiting for something to happen. I guess they are hoping osmosis will kick in and things will just happen.
They start their network marketing business with a glimmer in their eye. “One day I’ll retire from the drudgery of a job,” or “I will earn a thousand or so to supplement my income”, or “I’ll earn enough to cover a car payment.”
Remember that feeling? You learned about how network marketing worked and bought into the dream. The problem is, far too many sign up as distributors but they don’t take any action. They just wait for something to happen.
Network marketing is a business that you can fulfill your dreams. You can open up unimaginable freedom and lifestyle changes but . . .
. . . one thing is required. Well, actually a few things are required but they all require ACTION!!
Here are 3 ways to help keep yourself motivated for action:
- 1. Know Your WHY -This is really important. Recently I heard someone say your why should be big enough to make you cry. Mine sure did. Even still I can get choked up when I tell my story of how I got started. It needs to be emotional and inspiring. Although others will benefit from your cause, it has to be about you.
Example: My why was freedom: emotionally, financially and freedom from health problems – I was financially in trouble and I was suffering from suicidal depression. At that time I was exposed to medicinal grade essential oils. My sponsor, who knew I was in bad shape brought some oils over for me to try. Within minutes of trying an oil blend, I was lifted out of that depression to such a point that I was giggling and dancing around the house. My son came home, not knowing what had happened, asked if I was “On something.” That was life changing for me.
Having been in network marketing already but not feeling a good fit, I realized this was the company for me. This could, not only help my husband’s health issues, but also the financial mess we were in. We live in the poorest county in Ohio, my husband had lost his job of over 20 years. He had serious health issues and had been in the hospital. We were in a desperate situation. Being over 40, it was difficult for Mark to find a decent job so we both ended up doing all kinds of things but not making ends meet.
Freedom from all that mess was my HUGE WHY! - 2. Focus Daily on your WHY – When you are doing that, make sure you think deeply for a few minutes and let yourself access the emotion under it. This is VERY important. You’ll find motivation if you focus on this why EVERY SINGLE DAY. Start your day with it so you set the tone for the day.
- 3. Take Daily Action – Read books, listen to audios and conference calls, work on personal development, use at least 3-5 ways to promote your business, etc. Learn what you need to do and do something daily.
Even if you take small steps in the beginning, keep stepping forward and making progress. Visualize, set goals, work on personal development, learn to be a good marketer and leader. Stick to it and have a DMO – Daily Method of Operation.
If you stick to it and keep taking action, you won’t regret it.

Nice title, you are so very right about that. You can’t just sit around and wait for action to happen, but for you to take massive action. I suppose when the necessary hard work is mostly done you can sorta see your actions start to bear fruit. But starting out new, a daily consistent amount of action is always required. I to have a pretty strong why, and as the years roll by I see where I sit it and my “WHY”only grows stronger. I too have put in some hard work to make great things happen for myself although it may seem like a small percentage of success, but with each stride I grow closer and closer to my destination. I like your post and it is well written, Im almost jealous but, I’m learning to write better and better because of the wonderful post that I come across that are somewhat if not dead one related to some of my work. Wow, your why is incredibly powerful indeed!
I agree that it has to be huge and conjure deep emotions.
My Mum, Gran, Sister & Aunt suffer from bi polar disorder and I have seen just how low they can get and can definitely sympathize with what you must have been feeling when you were so low.
How amazing that you found something that works so well… sure beats the medications which seem to work for only a little while before having to change the cocktail – not to mention the side effects.

Hi Melody,
You are so right, one cant just desire to have milk and sit at the same spot expecting things to happen. A song writer once wrote that nothing good comes easy and thats true. A degree of labor is needed to get a certain result. Love the post and thanks for sharing.

Hi Victoria,
Definitely labor is necessary, otherwise nothing happens.
Great post Melody. You said a lot of great reasons and the why is the biggest. My why was being home with my wife and never having to travel without her again. I had reached the pinnacle in the “job” arena as CEO of a major corporation but was never home traveling all over the world. I am so very happy to be home with her now.
One other thought is that some people approach network marketing as a hobby even though they say they want to change they’re not willing to get out of their comfort zone. I’ll have a video on this in a few days.

Melody,
I love your title and that funny quote. I have certainly been a bit like that person sitting in a field when having to talk about my healing product, Chaga, with which I have seen first hand amazing healings. But Chaga is not my main business; it is just an adjunct, something I am offering because I know how powerful it is to keep the body’s immune system strong.
My real passion and goal is to help men and women heal through love – heal their bodies, heal their minds, heal their spirits and heal their relationships.
Thank you for reminding me to put my Why first – and then the pieces fit into place and I can speak more freely and openly about what I am offering – because I know why!

Melodie,
I absolutely adore the title of this post! Totally agree with you, there are so many people who think that joining a network marketing company in itself will make them rich. They fail to realize that like all good things in life, success in this industry takes commitment, work, and perserverence. When the going gets tough, as it usually does at one point or another, it’s very easy to quit, especially due to the low cost of entry.
This can be an incredibly rewarding profession, but it takes much more than many people see on the surface. With time, training, and hard work, it can be well worth the effort.

Wonderful tips, the one thing I have noticed after immersing myself in the personal development community for a few years know is people adopt the goal setting and affirmation habits, but what they dont change is the personal concept.
It is easy to set goal and continue affirming they will manifest, but when these objective are out of line with our self concept we never really make any progress.

I totally agree with your quote and post. Nothing in life just comes to you. Everything requires action. Anyone who believes otherwise is sadly mistaken. We have to be willing to take a risk in order to push towards our goals and our “why”. “If your why doesn’t make you cry then get a new one….” another one of my favorite quotes.

Melodie…it is funny how so many people think that things will change with strictly time passing by. Unless you actually saddle up on the stool and get your fingers a little messy and start milking that cow she just isn’t going to oblige you.
Many times fear of the unknown or fear of rejection or something similar stops people from acting in ways that they know would take them in the direction they want to go. That is why a person’s “Why” has to be very solid and strong. It needs to be able to carry them through the fear and break through the barriers that hold us back.
I appreciate your post very much…thanks. And I do agree the quote is great…a very vivid picture.

Melodie, that analogy of the cow is too funny. I think so many come online with that exact expectation and unfortunately have a rude awakening when it doesn’t happen.

Hi Melodie,
LOVE the cow quote and it certainly produced a great title…made me quite curious to see what you would say. T’is true that you must take action every day in fact, I believe that is true for any online business, not just network marketing. That daily action should be focused on high leverage work as well, not just busy-ness. I really agree with Adam’s comment about it being better to take imperfect action than it is to create a perfect plan. Well said, Adam!

Great article. The interesting thing is that once cows are primed for milking, if you don’t milk the cow they blow up!
It is importatn as you say to take action daily top build long term success. This applies even when you don’t feel like it.
Years ago, a Personal Development Guru taught me to put time in your diary every day for your business and do something associated with it in that time. It could be reading a book, or chatting to hyour up line – it doesn’t matter what the activity as long as it is focused on what you wish to build.
Pretty soon I had people I didn’t know calling me and wanting to be clients! Success is magical, the process is mechanical. Focus on what you desire and it will happen! Go milk that cow so it can have a better life!

Writing in a diary is a great idea. I have a day planner where I write down daily things I want to accomplish. Focus on those things and long term goals are crucial to success.
Hi Melodie,
This is such an adorable analogy and it is true! We have to take action to make things happen! I grew up in Dairy Country up in Northern California, so dairy cows are something I know a little about.
You are right, they won’t just back up to you, BUT they are very cooperative when you take the action to milk them. It actually relieves the cow of discomfort and gives you something rich and delicious to drink!
Sometimes, I am afraid to take action because I think that the prospect will say “no” or give me grief……but what if the prospect NEEDED what I have to offer? What if my action resulted in something good for us both?
OK, enough chit chat. Time to milk the cows!

Problem after working hard to come up with the funds Today I’m 93 dollars short on the down payment so last night I turned on the overdraft protection I want this so badly I will even pay the 35 dollar overdraft fee.
This is not something I recommend but after the depression set in when I could not get the rest of the funds even at a pawn shop I decided the heck with it I’ve done all I can humanly do and if it’s not enough I keep working toward the goal.

Great post Melody,
The reasons why we do what we do is to make life a better place for those that choose to do it. We learn that having a big why is so important but it isn’t until later on that we see what helping the right people can do.
Eventually some people wont have to say “I have a big why ” to become successful because they will be successful and nothing can stop that from happening except them.

My real passion is to help people connect to their highest and best life. I work with lawyers and other professionals to find this life through getting the right career fit, establishing an ideal work-life balance, and retooling their mindset.
It’s easy for me to stay motivated because I LOVE what I do. But one thing I do (to keep me on track for daily action) is that I keep a journal/log of my daily accomplishments. I write down everything I’ve done for my business and make sure I do something at least 6 days a week. I also write down all the positive things I’ve done for that day. Having this log lets me see how far I’ve come and it also ensures that I do at least one task a day.

When I started with my network marketing company, I totally felt that magic was just going to happen for me because I had signed up. But honestly that is how the opportunity was sold to me. They just made everything so glamorous and easy. Well it is not easy, it is hard work, but I appreciate it every day because I am gaining so many new life and business skills. Thanks for the post!

Hi Cori,
I agree. Network marketing is hard work but it is really well worth the effort you put in. I have been in my primary company for nearly 14 years. I have been able to retire my husband and he now works with me full time from home. There isn’t much better than having control of your life. You can work whenever you want. Find a company that fits your style, then stick to it like glue until you get there.
Hi Melodie,
I love that quote! When I first started in mlm I thought something magical was going to happen and people would just come to me (haha). But I think about my “why” all the time and that keeps me focused. My husband and I have lost our dream house, our pride and almost our family in the past 4 years and gone thru bankruptcy and I NEVER want to go thru that again. I want to be able to buy clothes for my kids if they need it or go out to dinner once in a while and not worry about money. I am tired of working 2 jobs and still struggling to make ends meet. I want more for my family and I’m not stopping until I get there. Thanks for posting that article it really hit home with me. Looking forward to the next one.
God Bless,
Trish

Hi Trish,
I know what you mean. Financial problems was a huge factor in my wanting to build a business from home. I wanted control of our financial situation. That was almost 14 years ago and one of the best decisions I ever made. Today I am fully supported by my home business. Keep at it and you will get there.
Ok , to repeat the general theme here ~ I LOVE that quote too!
So very apt, and unfortunately all too true, not just in network marketing but in life in general.
One can think happy thoughts 24 hours a day; watch The Secret a gazillion times; visualize and meditate till you’re blue in the face, but unless you get up and Do something, you’ll never get to your dreams.

I saw the title and had to read the post. I grew up on a dairy farm in upstate NY. You’re right if you want the milk you got to go get the cow and milk it!!
Lately I have been going to get the so called cow. I’m a clown and I love what I do, so how are people suposed to know what I do if I don’t tell them. I have been contacting the places I would like to perform at. I won’t get them all and that’s OK! I’m taking the action!!
Have a Great Day

Hi Chester,
Taking action is key.
That is a great quote; it’s true to business with just the appropriate amount of sarcasm, and cows are my favorite animals. Though, I don’t think we’ll find many cows sitting around Los Angeles even if waiting for one was an option. Success never came without failure; failure never came without reason; and learning from it how you get the Why, the motivation and a plan for action. Great points, and no matter the business, it all holds true. Though wouldn’t it be nice if we did get to lay around in a field all day like cows?
That’s a a great quote to summarize success and business. I just tried to imagine a cow backing up, too. Yesterday I was having a conversation about setting your mind on something, planning for it, focusing on it and achieving it. Everything is hard work, and things don’t come to people- especially in today’s society. And what better way to motivate then with a little humor?
Your point about taking daily action struck a chord with me .I always tried to do too much is too short a time , exhaust myself and then do nothing for days .Now ive found just doing a little every day consistently and with purpose means that i achieve much more realtively sppeaking then i ever did before .Small steps everyday but always moving forward. Just a thought.
