Reflecting On and Celebrating The Successes Of The Past Year and Setting Goals
Every year in December I like to take some time to reflect on past year. January is the beginning of a new year and it is a time to set goals. I’m not one for New Year’s Resolutions. People usually don’t take those seriously, however, I am a firm believer in setting goals and making action plans to achieve those goals.
I generally begin by thinking about the different things that have happened in the year to this point but also in the years prior in my network marketing career. Reflecting on both the good things that happened and things that weren’t so good. I don’t spend much time on the things that weren’t so good but just enough time to take note of anything I learned or ways I could get a better outcome.
Not only is it important to be regularly analyzing things and improving as we go, it is also important to celebrate the successes of the previous year. Celebrating is really important because it sets a success energy that attracts more good things.
Three Reasons to Reflect on and Celebrate Success:
1. We train our subconscious to be aware and open to success and abundance.
2. We give our subconscious and conscious mind PROOF of our success and progress.
3. It builds self-esteem, confidence and belief in our abilities.
Some things to include in your reflection:
Any successes large and small. Even the things you consider small. Some of these small successes are stepping stones to larger successes.
New things you learned – This is a huge one that people often forget to include. Reflect on all the training you have taken, books you have read, videos & audios and live events you have attended, anything that has been good for growth in your personal development or business skills. Really celebrate this one knowing that training and personal development is the biggest success secret of network marketing professionals who earn full time income.
Don’t forget the things you learned by trial and error. Like when you began learning to write a blog or make a video.
There are lots of things you can add to your list. I recommend writing down your reflections. If
you have been following my training for any length of time, you should have this done from previous years and have saved them. If so, take out some of your past years reflections and look at the progress over the years. This is really fun.
Reflecting on the progress you have made builds confidence. When I look back on the shy girl who was terrified to be a leader, I am amazed at how far I have come. It always gets me choked up as I write and reflect on how I have changed. Network Marketing is the best business for personal growth.
After you have finished reflecting on the previous year, you can make a plan of action for the next year. What will you do to increase your business? How will you improve on your marketing skills and what will you do to implement. Think about where you want to be at the end of 2012. Write that down. Then make a list of all the things you plan to do to get there.
Writing all of this down is very important. It helps you have a direction for the year. Keep a copy of both the reflecting of the previous year and the plan for next year. It is really empowering to look back at the things you have accomplished in the past and how far you have come, especially when you have the notes for several years. You can see your growth over the years which is such a confidence booster.

Terrific advice Melodie. You are so right about the value of reflecting on the year and how focusing on our successes can help to build confidence and self-respect. We can really learn a lot about ourselves by learning to ask key questions and take the time to think about our responses.

Dear Melodie,
It’s the funnies thing, but the more and more I have delved into my own business development process, the more I’ve seen that everything starts inside these minds of ours.
I see so many people trying to find external ways to reach success, but the truth is that this is all so holographic. We become more of what we believe inside to be true.
I’m still working on my action plan for 2012, but it is coming nicely together and it is all handwritten initially. I find that this somehow connects me to it in a larger way.
Thanks for the awesome food for fodder!

Fabulous advice Melodie! I’m going to do this most definitely in the next couple of weeks. I can only imagine how fun it is digging up the sheets from previous years!
2011 had definitely been an amazing year for our business and can’t wait to really sit down and take inventory of all that’s happened. I think we’ll be surprised at just how much we accomplished. Especially for me- I’m always on a mission to accomplish the next goal, so sitting down and reflecting on the year’s successes is going to be super fun!

Great advice… thanks, Melodie!
In our mastermind group, each time we write a lesson we are encouraged to review what we wrote the last time we studied the same chapter, to see how we’ve grown during those months. How much more so, if we keep a copy of our review of the previous year and plan for the year to come. Kind of like taking a family photo every year and seeing how your children grow and change.

The good thing about reflecting to our success is not only boosting our self-esteem but also self-motivation. It motivates us to continue reaching our goals and excel in our work or in our business.
That is a good post. I have reflected daily, weekly, but not yearly. I will definitely implement that. I also never thought about the learning as a success but it is definitely. We can definitely see the growth that way. I have a journal I use just for that purpose.

It is great to reflect and celebrate success, but not too often.
I probably will not be celebrating until I reach a couple more of my goals as they are big milestones for my own site and overall, biz.
Sometimes, when reflecting.. a cool thing to do is send a thank you to those who have helped you.

Hello Melodie,
I think looking back over the years I’ve happily learned heaps by accident!
I like to spend a little time as the year draws to a close to reflect on how the year has gone and what I will do in the year ahead.
This thinking normally takes place when I have been over fed my mum who likes to feed us all at least 6 square meals a day and as a result I am unable to move far from the couch!
Have a great week and a happy holiday

Melodie,
I have learned year gone by that reflection method is something done daily. It is what I do in the morning and before I go to bed. The writing down part is key factor for making timelines.
Your methods have been well known in our industry for all the 27 years I have been in this business. Your a fascinating coach and mentor in our industry.
The method is proven and the sad part is only a view of us utilize this golden method. Reflection and visualization go hand and hand. These are key methods needed to achieve any worht while levels of growth. Each of us have our definition of success as each determines. Yet, will never be accomplish if we to not follow your insightful advise. To start now writing down accomplishments and learning skills. That negative stuff I leave out for the reason of not planting bad seed/thoughts to meditate on. Good thoughts and actions are reflected and I have already learned from what doesn’t work. It is part of my being at this point. This is also shared with all my members to save them time and pain.
Melodie, thank you for sharing your vast knowledge which I appreciate. I am honored to call you a friend and look forward in learning from your sharing quality content now and in the futrue.
You have been a valuable part of our growth with understanding the best ways to continue huge steps in continueing our business with all ethical actions.

Great post, Melodie! It’s really important to think of what works and what doesn’t. I think this is the key part, because sometimes people think about nothing but positivity, but if it’s just happy talk, you won’t know how to improve in the future.

Melodie,
Love this post and what you are teaching.
The one thing that stood out when I read this and why everyone should do this exercise is this:
“It sets a success energy that attracts more good things”
I think writing your reflections of success and your next years success game plan is putting the law of attraction into action…. That’s what this is about.
Great Thoughts! May you have a super blessed New Year!

So true Melodie.. It’s time to reflect on the past years achievements and “failures” and to make some adjustments where I need to.
I have found many new ways to monetize my site, I just need to pick one and go for it.

I always struggle setting goals, but have taking charge and am going to make 2012 a goal achieving year.
Hi Melodie,
What a great post in preparation for the New Year. For those of us that understand and believe in the importance of goal setting, we should never limit the technique to daily, weekly or monthly.
We should have goals that encompass the upcoming year and beyond. It is important to be clear on these goals, write them down and incorporate them into a plan of action.
The best way to do that is to be willing and able to assess and evaluate your past successes and obstacles. A failure is never a failure if you learn from it and is important, so that you don’t male the same mistakes in the upcoming year…it is a valuable learning experience and as you stated, even a small success should be celebrated, as it will help you to gain self confidence and propel you towards further success.
Keep inspiring us,
Marc

Lovely post, Melodie. A lot of us dwell on what we want to accomplish in life and don’t spend enough time celebrating what we’ve ALREADY achieved. Until recently, I was guilty of that myself. But now, I have made it a personal habit of celebrating each day’s successes each night when I hit the sack. Naturally, I love the idea of doing this for the past year. Cheers!

Hi Melodie,
I’m not that hip on New Years Resolutions either. However setting goals are different. I think it is very important to reflect on past accomplishments. In fact, I keep a monthly list for inspiration. After a year, if they are written down, it sure give me a mental boost!
I think making sure it is in writing is also vital to make the whole thing work. “It is really empowering to look back at the things you have accomplished in the past and how far you have come, especially when you have the notes for several years.” I like the word empowering!
