What A Little Bird Can Teach Us About Persistence
For the past three weeks a little bird has been flirting with his reflection in my office windows. He starts early in the morning and does this all day until dark. He flutters, he taps and he flirts with the bird that is his reflection. He even brings worms and tries to feed that bird he thinks he is flirting with.
As I watch this little bird I am amazed at how persistent he is. We can learn a couple things from this little bird.
Lesson 1. Even though what he is doing is not working, he keeps persistently trying again. Persistence is an extremely important quality we all need as business owners. We all have setbacks it’s what we do when those setbacks happen that will determine how successful we will be. Will we keep giving it another try or will we sit down and give up.
Here are a couple Napoleon Hill quotes on persistence:
“Lack of persistence is one of the major causes of failure.”
“Those who have cultivated the habit of persistence seem to enjoy
insurance against failure”
Lesson 2. If we are persistently doing the wrong thing, we will
make no progress in our business. The little bird just won’t give up but he is never going to reach that bird in the reflection. It’s an illusion. In our business, we need to analyze what we are doing to make sure we are not persistently chasing an illusion.
4 Ways we could be chasing an illusion:
- Jumping from one network marketing company to another thinking if you move on you will have success in the next company. Sadly, I see this one all the time. People just don’t stick with one company. I realize that you might not find the right fit with the first company you are with but most people don’t even give it enough time to find out.
I stuck with my first network marketing company for 2 years before I decided it was not the right company for me. The company I am with today, I have been with for 14 years now. - Thinking you will have success in your network marketing business without promoting your business. You will NOT have success if you don’t promote your business. It’s just that simple. You need to massively promote your business and I mean promote in the right way.
Think about how conventional businesses promote their business. They don’t make a list of 100 friends and family and hit them up. They do advertising and promotion. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you shouldn’t sell to your friends and family but there are simply better ways to do it than is often taught in “old school” network marketing.
Because of my shyness, I looked for ways to get my information out there and get people to come to me. That takes the SCARY out of marketing. I was always directing people to my web sites. I set up things for them to go through on my web sites. Things like newsletters, autoresponders, audios and ways to contact me. Now I also do videos and social media. - Thinking internet marketing is a magic bullet – Many people are playing around online doing pretty much nothing but thinking they are building a business. You must be actively doing things online if you want success. Create valuable content that links to your website. You must do things to get your web site noticed. If you don’t promote your web site, it will be like an uncharted island in the ocean. No one will ever find it.
- Working on your business in a hit and miss fashion – Persistence means doing daily tasks in your business. Some days you will do more than other days but on those days when you can’t do much, you should always be doing a few basic tasks like checking email.
I had one woman call me and tell me she wanted to join my company under me because I was the only one who responded to her email out of 12 people she tried to contact to answer her questions. I was stunned when she told me that.
She had done a Google search and was looking for a good sponsor. These 12 people have web sites online but they aren’t acting like serious business people.

The list could go on but you get the idea. There are plenty of ways to learn good marketing skills and success mindset.
Be like a postage stamp and stick with it until you get there!

Persistence is a good thing as long as you are on the right track. Same as the bird that you saw from your office window, we make mistakes at identifying something that we think is right. It’s a learning process and the better we understand and learn from our mistakes the better the business would become.

Hi Melodie,
Its a nice post.Persistence with direction is the very basic of getting to success. These two things complete each other and it is not possible to get to the destination avoiding any of these two.

What a clever analogy! Personally, I need to move beyond the image of the bird though because birds are constantly smashing into my windows – so my view of the average bird is no where near as clever. That said, what a great point you’ve made – back to that old saying, if you keep doing what you’ve always been doing, you’ll only keep getting what you’ve always gotten … something like that. Besides, I think it’s really healthy to try new things – even when it seems a system is working, you never know when something might just be MUCH better! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Marquita,
I have the occasional bird flying into the window. I hate that. We feed the birds and squirrels. I don’t like seeing them get hurt.
What wonderful advice, Melodie.
I think all of us (I know I’m included) have done the sabotage things you listed, and maybe we still do to some extent.
You’re really keeping our feet to the fire, here. I think anyone that wants to be successful in networking either online or offline would benefit greatly from your insights.

Thanks David. I know we all sabotage ourselves sometimes. The trick is noticing and getting ourselves back on track.
What I great post Melodie. Being persistent is extremely important. The most successful people in this world have failed and oftentimes have endured many failures along their way. It’s just par for the course. What sets them apart is their persistence. They just kept on until they got it right.

That is so true. Failure is part of succeeding. It’s so frustrating to see people give up quickly. I always remember Thomas Edison inventing the light bulb. It took many failures to get things right.
Hi Melody,
You did a remarkable way of drawing me into the post with your metaphor of the little bird. It brought an added depth to your net work marketing concepts. Persistence is crucial, but like you said you have to be careful that what you are persisting towards is not an illusion.
I really enjoyed this post.

Great post, Melodie! Congratulations on signing someone up who appreciated your follow-through. It is great to see how providing service paid off!
Also, when thinking about if you should leave a company, I think that one thing is that we should see if the company has changed in a way that we can no longer support. For example, I was in a company, and they changed from a unilevel to a binary plan, and it became more and more obvious that people were just having all kinds of problems making the qualification by seeing how elaborate the bonus scheme became. To tell you the truth, if I would’ve had one thing to do all over again, I would’ve left as soon as they changed the compensation plan.

I agree Steve. There are times when you have to move on from a company. I feel blessed to have found my primary company 14 years ago but I have been in a couple on the side that I ended up dropping because they weren’t good for some reason. One had a product I loved but they went binary so I stopped building the business but kept using the product. Then they changed the product formula and ruined it so I left. Things like that happen and you do need to move on to something better but some people just hop from one thing to the next. It’s sad because they never build anything that can give them freedom.
Mel,
Such a great posting! I love persistance, but I wil be honest… it’s one of the hardest things to learn and understand.
The reason… it’s not measurable at first.
This is probably the reason why so many people give up, because punching a clock is measurable at the end of the week, but creating your own business that pays you as much as you want… takes time.
I just had an interview with a Video Diva, and she and I talked about the same thing.
Working and developing your business is much like farming. You plan today in order to harvest months down the road.
Such an awesome posting… thanks!

This is an excellent post Melodie. I know you used a bird to point out the ways we can succeed in Network Marketing, but I had to chuckle because the other day I was talking to a friend and I said something to the effect of, “Do you know why dogs are so cool?” It’s because they are so persistent and consistent! Your little bird is the same and it’s very cute.
I think one thing that is very important to keep in mind is your first two points of persistence is a must but we have to be persistent with the right tasks.
Jumping from one company to another, not promoting, thinking marketing is a magic bullet, and working in a hit and miss fashion is not the way to success. I think many of us did one or all four of those at one time or another. There is a long learning curve to get on the right track.
I am surprised that you characterize yourself as shy! It seems that you used that as an advantage to build your business. Great! Thanks for the post.

That’s for sure Raena. You have to be persistent on the right things. Otherwise, you are just spinning your wheels.
I have always been shy when it comes to approaching people. I know a lot of people are so I share that so I can help those who are like me.
Melodie what a great analogy and that to me show that is a mind very aware of what it wants to be focused on these kinds of things.
Most people would just gotten annoyed and not seen the lesson that was there and been able to share it.
It takes great leaders like you to guide those little birds to the right window.

Hi Steve,
Well, I have to admit, I have been getting a little annoyed. The bird has begun to hang from the middle of the window frame and tap on the glass almost like a woodpecker. He seems so determined to make friends with the bird in the window.
Wonderful analogy Melodie, its unfortunate that many marketers are not persistent enough to stick with one opportunity. Some where probably so close to reaching success before giving up and jumping into something else.
That’s awesome that you have been with your company for 14 years, it says a lot about you and your business.

Who know birds were such great teachers? I think you stressed some great points about persistence and truth. I think the other thing I learned from this bird is that he kept focusing on the wrong thing. I don’t think we can be successful in life if we don’t train ourselves to look at the right things. Are we spending too much time focusing on other people or past failures? We have much more to gain from focusing on our own efforts and where we want to go next. I hope you continue to enjoy your live object lesson! Take care, Allegra

Awesome post Melodie. It does take persistence and determination to stay focused on our goals and what we want to achieve, and never giving up. Your analogy with the bird was perfect. Not jumping from one business opportunity to another but taking the right action and doing the right work while maintaining focus on the end result is much more effective.

Hello Melodie,
So that is what those birds are doing when they hit up against your window.
This must be a common trait amongst birds, because I have heard, on more than one ocassion, people talking about their experience’s with birds tappin at thier windows.
Just yesterday, while sitting in my den, a bird ran up against my window. It’s never happened before and I hope he just got a little confused and won’t make it a habit.
It’s great though how you relate our IM/NWM efforts to the antic’s of this little birdie.
We sometimes knock our heads against the wall while trying to build our NWM business, and as you mention, we sometimes do not evaluate if what we are doing is producing the desired result.
And, if not, change what we are presently doing, finding something that will work.
As they say, insanity is doing the same thing over and over, that isn’t working, and expecting a different result.
Persistence can be a good thing, but only if, in the end, what you persist in, is producing the desired end results.
I hope you want mind, I have a related post on this subject:

Hello Melodie
Persistence is an essential factor in turning desires into success. Many times I have been like that bird (silly) doing the wrong thing. Analyzing what we are doing is very important and the 4 Ways we could be chasing an illusion points to things we tend to overlook. Changing companies, or changing to the latest marketing fad in search of the short-cut to riches seems to be something that happens a lot in our industry. Your graphic of the bird saying “that bird is silly” burns your message in to my mind.
Thanks

Hey Melody,
Persistence is very important, but we also need to know to step back and take a critical look at what we are doing, to make sure we are not persisting in the wrong direction
.
Quite often (not in all cases), it is not the companies , or your systems fault for you not succeeding, you need to allow it the time and your effort to make it work. It doesn’t always happen over night. Jumping to another opportunity will not help it.

Hi Melody, I heard a statistic recently that people change companies on average every 2 years. Interesting Huh? But I think it is true, and it is probably more often than that.
I love your quote and it is one of my favorites: “Be like a postage stamp and stick with it until you get there!” I also believe it builds credibility when you stick with a company instead of jumping around all the time.
All the best to you!
Lynn
Love your analogy with that silly bird. As you rightly point out, the bird teaches us ‘perseverance’. But blind-folded perseverance leads us nowhere. It will only generate negative vibes and add to the impatience. Hence it is really important to channelize our efforts in the right direction. This is a great post for someone who is thinking of entering the MLM world. You must have clear understanding of the things to be expected and the efforts to be put in.
Thanks,
Kevin Rudd
Persistence means doing daily tasks in your business.

“Those who have cultivated the habit of persistence seem to enjoy

I am impressed with your post. Heartly thanks for this one.
Wow,
Great post Melodie, on the values of persistence (and the pitfalls).
I think it’s important to note as you have that while being persistent is important, you definitely need to make sure you’re not like that bird, chasing an illusion. You need to pursue the things that will advance your business and be persistent on them…. For example:
Persistently spamming your friends’ facebook walls is just like the bird, no matter how hard you work at it, it simply doesn’t work.
Great Stuff.
Best Regards,
James
Hey Melodie,
These are all great tips. Rosemary and I recently made the difficult decision to leave our NM business after 4 years. Sometimes companies evolve in a way that you can no longer promote them and still be in integrity with yourself and your business. But like you said, you must give it time and a good try.
Like you, I have witnessed many marketers pick up and leave a company when things don’t click right away. It doesn’t work that way.
I am such a huge believer in persistence, but like you said if you are being persistent doing the wrong things, that’s a recipe for failure over and over again. That’s why a good mentor is so important — someone who has accomplished what you want to accomplish and been where you want to go.
Thanks for the great post, Melodie. I enjoyed reading it!

Hi Bob,
It happens sometimes where we have to walk away from a network marketing company. I have been in a couple on the side that I had to leave. I have been spoiled by my primary company and I am grateful I could stay with them for over 14 years.
Once we have a company that is a good fit for us, persistence and commitment are vital.
I love the analogue to the stamp. Stick to it like a stamp. I too am loyal almost to a fault but I know when I move or change something it’s because it really didn’t work and I need to make a change.
Persistence and more persistence makes a successful person.
Thanks Melodie

Melodie,
Well thought out and well written post. Yes, it is totally shocking that a prospect would try to contact 12 people and only get a hold of you! Network Marketing is definitely not easy. Well, not in my opinion, anyway. However, the problem with most people is that they don’t treat their network marketing business like a busines. They treat it like a spare time hobby, and then when they don’t get the results they want, they start looking at a new company to join when their friend tells them excitedly about some new “pre-launch” opportunity. I was glad that you admitted there are ways other than friends and family to build a business nowadays.
Thanks so much!

Hi Jim,
I totally agree. People treat their business as a hobby. I’m with Young Living Essential Oils.
Hi Melodie,
Great post, great lesson, great message and great little bird !
I wish more Networkers understood how important Persistence is to their success. People are always looking to make excuses for their lack of success and their inevitable jumping from the frying pan into the fire ( one company to another ).
The reality is that if they are Persistent, Consistent, Self-Disciplined, Accountable and take ACTION on a DAILY basis, they WILL achieve success.
This is a wonderful Industry, but the attrition is awful and if Networkers would learn to work their business SERIOUSLY and NOT lose FOCUS by always looking for the next best thing, they would be much better off.
Keep inspiring us,
Marc
